The Myth of the Efficient Business User - True Cost of Ownership of Business Intelligence
John Ladley, Founder & President, IMCue Solutions
We have reached a point where most business leaders would find it unimaginable to lose their departmental spread sheets and Access data bases, in spite of enormous redundancy and consistency issues. At the same time we view the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Business Intelligence looking at infrastructure and data movement costs. We do not measure the entire picture.
TCO must include the time and money being spent at the business users desk top – excel spread sheets, access data bases, and other forms of “shadow IT.” Most of the time this number if far larger than anyone within an organization can imagine.
This presentation will present some examples of the cost of end user computing. We will see how there can be negative ROI on business intelligence even if business users have access to all the data. This presentation will show how to collect, measure and then present a case to remediate excessive costs of end user BI. In turn, this builds a powerful business case for enterprise data management.

The human element and information management
John Ladley, Founder & President, IMCue Solutions
Did you ever discover that there is much in common between your enterprise data initiative and someone else’s, even when you are in entirely different businesses? Many of the similarities are based in human dynamics, that is the natural resistance of people to any type of change. In addition, communicating value and sustaining any Information management effort (MDM, DG, DW etc.) is a challenge a few months or a few years afterward the roll out. Sustaining the programs is just as important as selling it.
This presentation will cover real examples of scenarios from the speakers experience with Enterprise Information Management efforts and how change management and human dynamics was applied to defuse the situation, or where a valuable lesson was learned when the “wheels came off.” This presentation will review:
- Basic concepts to sell change management
- operational techniques to keep overcome the resistance from the “clay layer”
- Basic approach to sustaining activities for IM projects
